Choosing a Device

While there may be numerous devices listed on your school’s BYOD program, they are all suitable for use at your child’s school since these devices have been chosen based on information provided by your school.

Your school may have provided you with an information pack on any specific or minimum device requirements that your child may need due to their Year Level or subjects, so we advise that you have this information handy when choosing a device.

If you are looking for any accessories such as a bag or an extended warranty, these will become visible after you have selected a device of your choice. Once again, the offering and range of accessories and extended warranties are made available after consultation with your school. Note that some schools have requested that accessories are bundled with the device and this will be shown on the description of the computer/tablet. At this point in time, any accessories and warranties must be purchased in the same transaction as the device and cannot be purchased later.

Computer Terminology

We understand that some of the terminology used to describe the features of devices on any website can sometimes be confusing. However, the below information should be of some assistance in understanding the computer jargon.

CPU
This is the brains of the computer. The more ‘cores’ the CPU has, the more capacity it has to handle multiple processing at any given point of time. The ‘gHZ’ refers to how quickly it can process information, thus a CPU with more cores and higher GHZ is better but can be more expensive.
RAM
This is the temporary memory that the computer uses to assist in running programs or processors. Extra space or GB means the computer has more space to store data it needs temporarily to run. Again, devices with higher RAM will run better, but may be more expensive.
HDD/SSD
This is the permanent memory that the computer uses to store such data as the Operating System, Programs, Files, etc. and thus the higher GB a Hard Drive is the more you can store. Technology has changed in recent times where SSD (Solid State Drives) are now more readily available. SSD’s are better than their HDD counterpart as they do not have moving parts, work a lot faster and use less power. While they are more expensive it is of great benefit to have a device that has a SSD.
Wi-Fi/Wireless
This is technology that allows the device to connect to the Internet (usually through another device such as a router/server). There are many variations of Wi-Fi and these variations can differ in speed and connectivity options. The current Wi-Fi standard is ‘AC’ whereas devices still contain the ‘N’ standard. Majority of the time either standards will be fine for your school, but we still suggest referring to your schools minimum device requirements.
Battery Life
Battery life is important for devices as in most instances, schools do not allow children to charge their device at school – devices would need to be charged at home overnight. There is some information that will assist in deciding which laptop contains better battery life. Good practice to ensure your battery will last long is to enlist things as lowering screen brightness, turning off Bluetooth, etc. as these can drain the battery life.
Cells
A laptop battery contains Cells that assist in delivering power to your computer. Generally, the more cells a battery has the longer it will last between charges. 4 Cell Batteries are good for browsing the web and office applications. 6 Cells Batteries are suited for that as well, but are also better if your device will be running more intensive Graphic Design/Production programs as well; however, they can be more expensive.
Whr
This is the term given for Watt Hours. The higher the WHR rating on a battery generally means the longer the battery will last.
